A chemical process pump transfers energy from the motor to the pumped liquid through an impeller or another displacement mechanism.
In a centrifugal process pump, liquid enters the impeller near the shaft axis. The rotating impeller increases liquid velocity, and the casing converts part of that velocity into pressure before the liquid reaches the discharge connection.
In a plunger pump, the reciprocating displacement of the plunger creates suction and discharge cycles. This construction provides a different relationship between flow and pressure from a centrifugal pump.
